Museum of Fashion and Costume
Palermo ( I ) > Daueraustellung
The museum of fashion and costume of the Piraino Collection, consists of about six thousand units including: clothes, bodies, douillettes, paletots manteaux, clothes from home, robes volants, accessories, lace, fabrics, underwear, popular clothing, ethnic, civil and military uniforms, childish and religious clothes, coming largely from ancient Sicilian families through a period of three centuries. A cross-section that is able to easily delineate the evolution of the taste of fashions that took place inside the island.
A wealth that finds in the rich fabrics and sublime embroideries of the past the imprinting of the renowned Italian and foreign and Sicilian tailors, such as the atelier of the French Madame Durand, that of the compatriot Pillitteri-Merlet and the Syracuse sisters, all skillfully able to reflect the fashion of the Parisian and London “theatres”. Celebri couturiers are present in the prestigious collection: Poiret, Fortuny, Worth junior, Doucet and Dior, to name a few, to which are added a constellation of other Italian houses such as La Ville de Lyon Florence, Serafina Barberis-Tourin, Angelici & Figli-Napoli.
Among the national and international scholars to have actively interested in the scientific potential of the material present in the collection are Cristina Giorgetti (University of Florence), Giuliana Chesne Daufhinè Griffo (University of Florence) and Maria Grazia Ciardi Dupré (University of Florence). The curriculum of the collection is extensive, having been exhibited in Formosa, the Arab Emirates, Atlanta in America and many Italian cities.
