Barbie®: The Exhibition
London (GB) > 05.07.2024 - 23.02.2025
Opening to coincide with the 65th anniversary of the Barbie brand in 2024, the exhibition will map the Barbie legacy that started in 1959 when Ruth Handler wanted to craft a different narrative for her daughter, Barbara. It will explore the story of Barbie through a design lens, including fashion, architecture, furniture and vehicle design. Through a new partnership with Mattel Inc., we have been granted special access to the extensive Barbie archives in California, and dozens of rare and unique items will go on show alongside other key loans and acquisitions to tell the story of the iconic brand over the past six-and-a-half decades.

DIOR - A New Look
Den Haag (NL) > 21.9.2024 - 26.1.2025
In the autumn of 2024, the Kunstmuseum Den Haag, Netherlands, will present an exhibition about Christian Dior, founder of one of the world’s greatest fashion and couture houses, and his unique legacy. This retrospective – entitled DIOR – A New Look – was initiated and conceived by the Kunstmuseum and is therefore distinct from previous exhibitions staged abroad. “It will focus on Dior’s design and explore the House’s unique essence, developed during the period 1947-1957, when Monsieur Dior himself was at the helm. His successors have always respected this DNA, conveyed through themes like the New Look, the love of flowers, heroines and strong women, and the Dior Dream, which form the backbone of the exhibition”, explains fashion curator Madelief Hohé.
The Kunstmuseum Den Haag is also launching a dialogue between the vision of the founding-couturier, Christian Dior, and the current Creative Director of Dior women’s collections, Maria Grazia Chiuri. “Her work is given a central role in this exhibition which truly reflects the idea of a New Look, a 'new vision'",” Madelief Hohé points out. It will also present pieces of costume jewellery, a selection of fashion drawings, iconic images and a focus on women who were important to Christian Dior, as well as those who are important to Maria Grazia Chiuri. The Creative Director is indeed committed to designing for the modern woman, works with female artists and has an eye for the way they see things. The exhibition at the Kunstmuseum not only pays attention to Dior’s famous customers but also to the women who work so hard behind the scenes. These emphases ensure a fresh new look at Dior.
DIOR – A New Look will feature designs from the collection of the Kunstmuseum Den Haag, augmented by exceptional loans from Dior Héritage, but also from Palais Galliera (Musée de la Mode de la Ville de Paris), and public and private collections in Belgium, Germany, Monaco and the United States. The exhibition will be accompanied by a Dutch-language catalogue and a children’s art book about the young Christian Dior.

Dalí and Fashion
Mailand (I) > September 2024 - Januar 2025
Dali's genius combines rapidly evolving expressions of his artistic sensibility and an experimental engagement with new art forms. The exhibition has the collaboration and support of the ones of most prestigious international museum institutions, and seeks to explore the most intimate and intense aspects of the artist's creative process, where fashion and art nurture an ever-evolving form of expression. Fashion is perhaps one of the least familiar fields in which Dali embodied his artistic universe. Yet, fashion is one of the artist's most prolific contributions at all stages of his career. This is a unique opportunity to admire and gain insight into Salvador Dali's astonishing complexity and in part his work as an eclectic genius.

WARdrobe
Cambridge, Ontario (CA) > Open dates to be announced
Our feature exhibition will look at how war has influenced fashion throughout history. Fabricating Fashion: Textiles for Dress, 1700-1825
Chicago (USA) > bis auf weiteres verschoben
In 18th-century Western Europe, prior to the Industrial Revolution, textiles were constructed entirely by hand, making them much more highly valued than the machine-made fabrics of today. Clothing from the period was also assembled by hand, either by specialist tailors or by the wearers themselves, making fabric selection the first—and arguably most important—decision. The wealthy patrons who bought or commissioned these delicate fabrics chose what to purchase based on several factors, the most important being the quality of the design, technical execution, and type of material. The rest of the population could not afford to buy fine textiles, yet they had a great deal of firsthand knowledge about techniques and materials, as up to one-third were involved in making fabric. This labor-intensive process spanned all levels of society and included many steps—from raising sheep for wool, growing flax for linen, and spinning and dyeing threads to designing patterns, making lace, weaving, embroidering, and block printing—all of which had to be done before the fabric could be sent off to merchants and markets to be sold. The collaborative nature of making fashionable textiles also extended to the global trading network that brought silk from China and cotton and cashmere from the Indian subcontinent.

Prada. Front and Back
London (GB) > verschoben wegen Covid19
The exhibition will offer unprecedented insight into Prada’s creative approach, inspirations and landmark collaborations. Facing the future, it will explore Prada’s transformation of the idea and practice of fashion and the continuing evolution of a global enterprise. Different sections will reflect the idea of front and back, conveying both the surface of fashion and the creative and industrial infrastructure on which it depends. Miuccia Prada’s story is unique. Joining the family business in the mid-70s, she turned it into one of the most successful fashion houses in the world, while transforming the landscape of style and culture. With her husband, Patrizio Bertelli, she has changed the way that people dress, redefined how we understand luxury, explored new materials and technologies and invested passionately in art, design and architecture. She has made Prada the essence of modernity.
